Dazzling amber sunsets between plumes of clouds and hazy, distant hills fill wax-covered images on small squares the size of Polaroid photos. The boxes are set within plexiglass panes lined-up in a row — in the familiar shape of airplane windows. Then one realizes Lauren Cardenas’ images are transferred onto plastic-wrapped slices of American cheese — a stark reminder of the sort of sandwiches handed out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to undocumented immigrants being deported.
